Prayag Kumbh

COMPLETE: February, 2019
PHOTOGRAPHS & TEXT: Sreeranj Sreedhar, Saumalya Ghosh, Suresh Naganathan

The Ardh Kumbh Mela, held in Prayag every 12 years, is considered the “World’s largest congregation of religious pilgrims”.

In February 2019, three In-street members Sreeranj Sreedhar, Saumalya Ghosh and Suresh Naganathan took up the project to bring out the spirit of the Mela through their imagery. For 4 days, they walked tirelessly across the banks of the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical river Saraswati.

While they took the shots of the famed Sadhus and Naga babas, they also crucially turned their lenses on the pilgrims, lakhs of common people who left their homes to undertake this once-in-a-lifetime journey. Their energy and devotion that played such an essential role in this mass Hindu pilgrimage, had to be captured.

This project ‘Prayag Kumbh’ is an ode to that faith and devotion to the Divine.
